- understand the base data and how it affects the way the system runs
- are able to make decisions on the data you wish to obtain from the system
- can identify areas of responsibility for your staff
- can identify areas of configuration in both functionality and display
- can identify those areas of the system that may be set up by transferring data from your existing system
